Unmet Emotional Needs

Unmet Emotional Needs

What is an emotional need? According to William Harley Jr, "An emotional need is a craving that when satisfied leaves you with a feeling of happiness and content and when unsatisfied leaves you with a feeling of unhappiness and frustration." In my practice I have discovered men and women have many emotional needs, some needs are the same and some needs are different. For example, women may report a lack of affection in their marriage, a feeling of not being connected to their mate. Men may express an emotional need to enjoy recreational activities with their wife of partner, allowing the couple more time to connect emotionally, in and out of the home. Men may also feel the emotional need to be sexually connected to their partners.

" I have discovered couples seek treatment for the following unmet emotional needs: a need to feel safe, trusted and emotionally connected to their partner, to name a few "

In working with couples, over the past 30 years, I have discovered couples seek treatment for the following unmet emotional needs: a need to feel safe, trusted and emotionally connected to their partner, to name a few. It is important to note, many couples are looking for financial support from their partner, allowing them to feel economically burdened or frightened. A significant number of women have an emotional need for more intimate conversation, whereas men desire or want admiration from their partner.

Emotional needs play a major role in partner relationships, Men and women verbalize an emotional need to express themselves without being judged by their partner. Couples who can meet each other’s emotional needs have a greater chance of living in harmony and peace. A main component of every relationship is to provide emotional support to your partner.
